Accidents happen, even during the holiday season. Grandma spills\nthe mashed potatoes all over the floor. Uncle Joe knocks a whole bunch of ornaments\noff the tree. Aunt Kathy trips over the presents and hurts her hip. But what\nhappens when a dental\naccident<\/a> occurs over the holidays when your dentist is closed? Knocked-Out Tooth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you knocked out a tooth while tossing the old pigskin\naround outside. In that case, locate the tooth and gently pick it up by the crown\n(the part visible in your smile) and not<\/em> the pointed root. Rinse away\nany debris and insert the tooth back into its empty socket if you can. If that\u2019s\nnot possible, place it either in between your cheek and gums or in a glass of\nmilk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broken Tooth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chowing down on some crunchy holiday cookies or candy canes may\nbreak or chip a tooth. If that\u2019s the case, gather up all the pieces you can find.\nYour dentist may be able to reattach them later. Apply a cold compress to the\narea to cut down on swelling and pain. You could also take an over-the-counter\npain reliever as directed on the bottle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost Crown or Filling <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sticky holiday candy can dislodge a filling or crown. If that\nhappens, locate and wash off the restoration. Your underlying tooth will likely\nbe more vulnerable to decay and sensitivity without the crown or filling, but\nluckily you can temporarily reattach it. Coat the inside with toothpaste,\ndental cement, or a thin layer of sugar-free chewing gum first. Whatever you\ndo, do not <\/em>use superglue! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toothache <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nothing ruins your joyous holiday quite like a sudden\ntoothache. While it might be something small like a cavity, there is also a\nchance that your tooth pain is caused by something more serious, like an infection\nor abscess. Either way, you\u2019re going to want to see your dentist as soon as\nthey open after the holidays for treatment. In the meantime, you can take store-bought\npain relievers. Just be sure to not<\/em> place aspirin directly on the sore\narea, as it can irritate the gum tissue and worsen your discomfort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There aren\u2019t many worse things that can happen over the\nholidays than a dental emergency. However, with this guide, you should be prepared\nto handle any dental accident that comes your way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
