Besides social distancing, you\u2019ve probably heard several tips to reduce the spread of the virus. While some are true, like frequent hand washing, there are others that aren\u2019t necessarily effective, like using a mouthwash to lessen the risk of transmitting the virus. Although there\u2019s some truth to this, here\u2019s what you need to know to keep yourself and others safe during the COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mouthwash and Combatting COVID-19<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last several weeks, there have been various COVID-19\nstudies. Among them were the effects mouthwash can have on killing the virus. The\nrecent papers out of China reported the use of chlorhexidine to prevent and control\nthe aerosol transmission of COVID-19. With viral particles found on the saliva\nof infected patients, using the mouthwash before dental procedures can temporarily\nreduce the presence of COVID-19 in the mouth; however, the effects are short-lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the results of the studies, it\u2019s normal to assume\nusing mouthwash at home can help combat COVID-19, but the answer isn\u2019t as\nsimple as improving your oral hygiene. While good dental habits are important,\nCOVID-19 is initiated and spread in the oral and nasal cavities and the throat.\nNo matter how well you brush and floss or the type of mouthwash you use, your\noral hygiene habits have no effect on the transmission to these locations. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, the American Dental Association and the\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention don\u2019t endorse using chlorine dioxide\nor chlorhexidine to destroy the virus. You can continue to use your daily\nmouthwash, but don\u2019t expect it to lessen your risk of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">COVID-19 and Your Oral Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although your oral hygiene habits won\u2019t necessarily prevent\ntransmitting COVID-19, there are steps you can take at home to keep you safe. It\u2019s\nbest to disinfect your toothbrush after every use. Dilute 1 teaspoon of 3%\nhydrogen peroxide in 1 cup of water to soak your toothbrush. If you\u2019ve recently\nrecovered from illness or you have symptoms of COVID-19, it\u2019s best to replace your\ntoothbrush. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brushing and flossing habits are more important than\never because many dental offices are closed, so you may need to delay your\ncleaning and checkup. It\u2019s best to brush your teeth at least twice per day for\n2 minutes per session and floss every night before going to bed. A mouthwash\ncan complement your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifetime.dental\/preventive-dentistry.html\">oral hygiene<\/a> routine\nbased on your individual needs, such as combatting dry mouth or tooth sensitivity.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep Your Smile Healthy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we spend more time at home, there\u2019s no better time than\nnow to recommit to a healthy smile.
