Pregnancy brings plenty of excitement, but it also comes with a lot of questions—especially when it comes to your health. If you have a cavity, tooth pain, or an upcoming dental appointment, you may wonder whether it’s safe to receive dental care while you’re expecting.

The reassuring news is that routine dental care and many common dental procedures are not only safe during pregnancy—they’re encouraged. Keeping your mouth healthy can benefit both you and your growing baby.

Don’t Skip Your Regular Dental Visits

Some expectant mothers postpone dental appointments because they’re worried treatment could be harmful. In reality, regular dental exams and professional cleanings are an important part of prenatal care.

Pregnancy hormones can increase your risk of developing swollen, tender, or bleeding gums, a condition often called “pregnancy gingivitis.” Left untreated, gum disease may become more severe over time.

Routine cleanings help remove plaque and tartar while allowing your dentist to monitor your oral health and address small problems before they become larger ones.

Which Dental Procedures Are Safe?

Many routine dental procedures can be safely performed during pregnancy.

Preventive care, including exams, cleanings, and necessary fillings, is generally considered safe. If you develop an infection or experience significant tooth pain, it’s usually better to receive treatment than to delay care until after delivery.

Dental X-rays can also be taken when necessary. Modern digital X-rays use very low levels of radiation, and protective shielding is used to help keep both you and your baby safe.

If your treatment requires medication or anesthesia, your dentist can select options that are considered appropriate during pregnancy and coordinate with your physician or obstetrician if needed.

When Is the Best Time for Dental Treatment?

While dental care is safe throughout pregnancy, the second trimester is often considered the most comfortable time for planned procedures.

During the first trimester, your baby’s organs are developing, so many elective procedures may be postponed out of an abundance of caution. By the third trimester, lying comfortably in the dental chair for extended periods can become more difficult.

However, urgent dental problems shouldn’t wait. Severe toothaches, infections, broken teeth, or swelling should be evaluated promptly, regardless of which trimester you’re in. Treating an infection early helps protect both your oral health and your overall well-being.

Tips for a Healthy Smile During Pregnancy

A few simple habits can help keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your pregnancy:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between your teeth.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Choose nutritious foods that support both oral and overall health.
  • If morning sickness causes vomiting, rinse your mouth with water before brushing to help protect your enamel.

Most importantly, let your dental team know that you’re pregnant and share any medications you’re taking so they can tailor your care accordingly.

Pregnancy is an important time to prioritize your health, and your smile is no exception. Receiving appropriate dental care can help you stay comfortable while supporting a healthy pregnancy.
